World Read Aloud Day

March 6th was World Read Aloud Day.
We learned that 793 million people cannot read!  We spent extra time reading that day.  We also thought of some ways that we could help people that don’t know how to read.  Here are some of our ideas:
We can read for them.
We can read to them.
We can help someone when they get stuck on a word.
We can give them a book that’s easier to read and then keep pushing them with harder books.
We can show little kids the pictures in a book..
We can give books away that we don’t read anymore.
We can teach someone how to read.
We can be a good friend and not make fun of someone who can’t read well.
We can record a book for people to listen to.

We can do a lot of things to help, what can you do?

Rock the Presidents by Shaun, Andrew, Noel, and Makayla

We went to Sheas in Buffalo to see Rock the Presidents.   There were 3000 people there so it was a loud audience.  We liked the show.  They sang 28 songs!  The songs were all about our presidents.  They led us as we waved our arms back and forth, did fist pumps in the air, and other fun motions.

The Cast was just 3 people:  Yolanda London, Eric Boudreau, and Colin Ross.  They had cool outfits, nice shoes, lots of energy, and good voices.  The 2 young men ran out into the audience 2 times.  They ran to the back of the auditorium and then back to the front giving high 5’s along the way.  Two of our favorite songs were: They Got a Dog,, and Hail to the Chief.  We also liked Are You a President-to-Be?

They taught us some interesting facts about our past presidents.  We played a game called Presi-tron.  They described a president and we had to try to figure out who they were talking about.
Here are some facts we did not know:
Ronald Reagan once tried stand-up comedy.  Gerald and Betty Ford were fashion models.  Ulysses S. Grant got a speeding ticket on a horse.  President Obama collects “Spiderman” comic books.

After the show, we picked up a pizza at Marks Pizzeria on our way back to school.  It was a long ride.  We all ate in the cafeteria before going home.  It was a really fun day.

The Pilgrims by Makayla, Madisyn, and Brianna

In History we have been leaning about the Pilgrims. They left England and went to the Netherlands for religious freedom. Then they went to America. They were on a ship called the Mayflower and it was a long journey. Some people died on the trip. Before they got off the ship all the men signed the Mayflower Compact. They promised to set up a government and follow the rules of the new government. A Native American named Squanto made friends with the pilgrims and helped them.

What We've Been Learning

We have been learning a lot lately that we wanted to share with you. Mike, Makayla, Madisyn, and Mrs. Tharp wrote about what we have been studying, learning, and doing.  We have been doing a lot of writing.  We had lessons on dignity for all and writing assignments that made us think about how the characters in the book we were reading were responsible and showed respect for each other.  We wrote about a respectful or responsible person we know, or a time when we acted responsibly.  We wrote about our 12 favorite things and participated in a Day of Blogging on 12.12.12.  We worked hard to reply to all of the comments on our blog.  We did lots of writing!

We finished our history unit on Henry Hudson.  We learned about elements, compounds, and mixtures in science.  We did math in a lot of different ways.  We worked on the computer, on the board, and some of us still really like worksheets.  We finished the book " The Boy Who Ran For President".  We liked it a lot.  It was about a boy our age who ran for president and actually won!

We did Christmas bowling in gym and earlier we had some fun with a parachute.  We also learned soccer and hockey skills.  We finished some cool Christmas projects in Art class.  We used water colors to paint our own Christmas trees, and other techniques to create some unique tiling effects on ornaments and decorations.  Miss Tharp ordered one of our famous cookie platters for students in the YALT program at Daemen College, and so we made brownies and rice crispy treats. In Home and Careers we made some really fun Christmas cards using recycled cards.  We also started a fun Friday where we get to choose which station we want to go to.  We have games, snacks, nail polish etc.

Mrs. Tharp signed us up for 2 new sites, Zondle and Magna High, to help make learning fun at school and home!  We all love working on edmodo whenever we have time.  The apps are fun and we like sending messages to each other.  Some of us were able to join an edmodo group with students from other states and countries that we are working with on a project.  We liked meeting them and sending messages to them.  It turns out we like a lot of the same things - computers, sports, games, TV, and we even like some of the same books.
